So, what’s the “Word on the Street” in the City Council election for Ward 5?

This race pits current Councilwoman Phyllis Cleveland against a challenger, Richard Starr. Ward 5 includes the neighborhoods of Kinsman, Central, Midtown, and parts of downtown. Councilwoman Phyllis Cleveland has represented this ward since 2006.

How do the candidates stack up?

Phyllis Cleveland has risen to a leadership position in the city, serving as the Majority Leader of Cleveland City Council. Her top priorities for Ward 5 include ridding the city of abandoned and dilapidated buildings. But, she also has focused on getting new housing built for Ward 5. She believes that it’s not enough to just tear down, we must build for the future as well.

She also worked to establish the new Care Alliance Health Center, and helped bring about one of the largest greenhouse projects in the country right here in Ward 5.

On a personal level, Phyllis is known as just a regular, approachable neighborhood resident. A graduate of East Tech and Case Western, she is known for keeping in touch with what’s really going on in the neighborhoods.

She is being opposed by Richard Starr, who some people see as quite a politician.

So, what’s the “Word on the Street” about how this race will turn out this Tuesday? Well, Phyllis Cleveland already defeated Richard Starr in the primary. It was somewhat close, possibly due to some tactics that Richard Starr used which may have violated election law.

All in all, it looks like most residents of Ward 5 will be re-electing Phyllis Cleveland to Cleveland City Council this Tuesday.
